Every day we see companies having people, systems, processes and policies in place and we see them measuring and managing goals, strategies, outputs and outcomes but very often these same companies don´t seem to be able to completely achieve their goals and the results they defined as important for themselves.
Why is this so?
In fact, outputs and outcomes are tangible and easier to measure and manage. Beneath the surface lies people´s values, beliefs, attitudes, prejudices and these are the factors that can make the difference between success and failure.
Values are the principles people use for making decisions. Our Values motivate our actions and behaviors. Values can be positive (respect, trust, openness) or limiting (blame, bureaucracy, control). Limiting Values not only create dysfunction in our lives, they also create Cultural entropy in the Corporation.
Companies are living organisms with their own DNA, working very silently beneath the surface, in fact, a company is no more than a group of people with a common set of values and beliefs, creating together a Culture, the Corporate Culture.
In fact, Culture is the way people interact everyday with each other, how they make decisions and take action, how they feel engaged to the company´s goals. In other words, Corporate Culture is very simply: “the way we really do things around here”.
If the Leaders of the company are just looking at the numbers then Culture is not on their radar, it´s not something that they are measuring or even aware of, and yet, exists underneath all the systems, processes and people´s interactions within the organization.
Bringing this important component to the open, revealing what are the deep problems people say they are facing in their day-to-day activity and interaction inside the company that is becoming more then a problem to them, but is creating real dysfunction many times assumed to be “how things are” and never addressed.
Based on the data collected in more than 90 countries, working with more than 6.000 organizations and over 3.000 Leaders, our CTT – Cultural Transformation Tools from Barrett Values Centre gives us the knowledge to affirm that companies with high levels of cultural dysfunction are not doing financially well when compared with other same sized companies operating in the same markets.
Also Leadership alignment is essential today in business as the Leaders values´ drive the culture; the culture drives employee fulfillment; employee fulfillment drives customer satisfaction; and customer satisfaction drives financial success.
Leaders are challenged every day in making decisions in an increasingly complex, chaotic, and unpredictable business world. Making decisions based on what they truly value keeps Leaders true to themselves and to the future they want to experience. Values based Leadership is a way of making authentic decisions and a genuine and authentic Leader builds trust and commitment on employees and customers.
